I'm so excited that Connie asked me to be on her team -- she is such a sweetheart and amazingly talented! :)

She has released a kit called Fresh Start....I adore the colors.

I can't believe today is New Year's Eve! That means that today is the last day of my retirement sale, as my store will be closed tomorrow. I want to thank all of the store owners I have worked with over the last two and a half years -- especially Ginger and Shannon! I have learned a lot and had a lot of fun designing.

I also want to thank my fans. I met a lot of fantastic people through my designing. I hope we stay in touch, even though I'm retiring! Thank you to all of you who have encouraged me, whether it be through your kind words or by buying my products. I love you all!

Last, but not least, I want to thank the fellow designers I've come to know. I've learned a lot from you and have made some amazing friends. I'm happy that I even got to collaborate with some of you!

I, Ariana, CT girlie, challenge you, world, to scrap your bad photos. That's right - the blurry ones. The ones were you were just about to snap the cutest picture ever but the baby/toddler/teenager turned away at the last second and all you got was the back of their head. The smile that turned to a frown or tears. The ones that started as a frown or tears. The ones where your loved one suddenly flung their hand up to hide their face. The ones you keep on your computer but have no intention of ever using. Dig them out. Let's see 'em.

Challenge details: it will be for the month of October 2011, the layout must be at least 75% Kat's Creations products, and the winner will get a $10 to her shop.

And I have so many stories I want told that don't have any photos to go with them -- that's where this template set comes in!

Thank God it's Friday! It has been a LONG week, filled with doctor appointments. Besides that, my husband's work decided that mandatory overtime starting at 5:30am wasn't enough. Now he's working from 4:30am to 3pm. Talk about long days! They took away his day off during the week, but at least he still has Sunday off.

Anywho, back to the topic at hand. How's the weather where you're at? It's 41* here! Hard to believe that it was in the 70s a couple of days ago, but that's Wisconsin for ya. The cooler weather is what my new release is all about. I love autumn -- the leaves changing, the crisp air, going to apple orchards, etc. That's why I decided to go ahead and make this kit, available in the bundle or separately......and the best part is that, whichever way you decide to go, it's all available at 25% off through the weekend!

Never forget

Normally, I don't post much on the weekends, but I wanted to take a minute today to remember all of those who lost their lives on 9-11-01. It's hard to believe that this is the 10 year anniversary of such a horrific event.

I clearly remember that I was at home, in my bedroom, when my mom told me about the first plane. I was a junior in high school {homeschooled}. I didn't understand what was going on and, before that, I never even HEARD of the twin towers. I remember watching all of the coverage on tv, though, and was just sick to my stomach over it.

It is Tuesday! You are not lost... and I am here hyped up on caffeine and a sense of accomplishment. Ever since the kids have started school I have been getting up early, getting lots done and sleeping well. Oh what a sense of discipline will do for a life.

There are many artistic types who agree that the value in art is in the creating. Of course, there are also the art critics who say that if the art has no value then you probably would have been better off doing laundry instead. But value in art is all relative. That is why I never listen to critics of any type. I want to make my own mind up.

Anywho... back to my first thought; Creating for creating sake. It has been my experience that in scrapbooking, this has not worked long term for me. Once you have 100, 200, 1000 LO that are all close to gorgeous in your own eyes you wonder how many more you need. When I am creating just for creating sake.. to use a certain picture (again) or use a certain kit because its pretty, etc. I do love the results but when my kids see the LO later in life they will wonder why that picture of Avery on the beach when she was 7 is in every other LO or sadly where was the picture taken, how old was the child in question and what happened that made this moment important to scrap. Alot of times I leave all this information out just to make something aesthetically pleasing. And int he end I lose my motivation to scrap.

Now I understand the 365 trend and the weekly or monthly LOs. They actually have meaning to others who might look at them down the line. I do have LO for each of my kids representing each year of their life. I think they will love these because they can actually see how they have grown and what was important to them at that age.

So my point is go ahead and create because you love to and you have a passion too but don't forget to remember (HAR) who you are scrapping for and what you are trying to capture for posterity. That is what I am going to do.

Ok, two weeks in a row! I am just bad, bad, bad! And i have yahoo send me a reminder and everything! But I have a REALLY good excuse this week. Kid's Meet and Greet the teacher Day was yesterday and I have 3 kid's in the Lower Elementary this year. So we were at the school for 5 hours between all the paper work for three kids which included 9, count them, NINE Emergency Forms because triplicet is the number of choice! Each grade had assigned meeting times so I juggled papers, bags of supplies and kids between meeting with a break to Applebees for lunch and a corona to get me through the last meeting. Pretty good excuse huh? OK don't ask me about the other hours of the day that might have been free to write. I forgot! Jeez.

My Random Tidbit for the day is don't start playing Sims 3 unless you have lots of extra time in the day cause directing a virtual life takes up lots of real time!

Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie - Mojo Ebb and Flow

So, I have been thinking about the ebb and flow of my mojo. Sometimes i just can not wait to scrap. I have this craving, this need to play with paper and elements. And at other times, especially when Ineed to create on demand for a designer I am not always at my best.

So what to do? What to do?

I can be pretty rigid. As a kid, I only read one book at a time. Having two going was messy and chaotic. And I always finished one even if it wasn't any good. Leaving something undone was, again, messy. But as I have grown older and been medicated to everyones advantage, I have let these things go. I now have about 4 books going. Different genres. Different topics. Makes life more interesting and sometimes, suprisingly, I find connection between them.

So, I decided I needed to use this same lack of rigidity for my scrapbooking. Use to be I wouldn't even sit at the computer to scrap unless I had a few hours in front of me. The lack of time stiffled me. But now, I have my handy dandy little "LO in progress" file. And I stash LO in there when I lose direction or vision for one. Coming back the next day or even days later helps me get a different perspective.

So, my point, try setting LO aside and coming back later. You may find that the LO you finish has gone in directions you never dreamed.

Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie - New Trends in Digi Scrapping

When scrapbooking went digital I was caught running behind the bus. Lucky for me, I had been learning a graphic software program for other reasons and it meshed once I kicked up the juice and jumped on the bus.

But since digi scrapping took off other trends popped up all over that related to the new medium. I thought I would list a few here. I got the idea from my cell phone. My son was playing with my phone and showed me how you can take a series of pictures, one after the other. When we were looking further to see what else the silly phone could do we found the "fun frames". You can choose a frame, almost like a frame cluster that designers make, and take a picture with the frame already on the screen. You compose the picture with the frame there and take it. You can then use it as an email and send it to a friend. You can also download it to your computer and use it in your scrapbooking. Not all phones take great pictures though. I am sure they will be increasing resolution. I don't have an iphone or any such "cool" phone but there are alot of apps out there that givce digiscrapbookers a step up.

Another digi trend these days is the use of tablet devices. More people will be embracing the new tablet devices. These have advantages over netbooks because of their large, vibrant screens, their larger keyboards, and their access to mobile applications. Look for increasing use of these stylish devices in scrapbooking. While on the go, you could use the built-in camera or plug in your SD card for creating and loading photos. Next, organize and journal them. Alot of designers use tablets to do their own drawings and doodle. You too might have this artistic skill.
I am toying with buying one myself but its a draw between the tablet and a Kindle.

Thirdly, printing prices have gotten better and better. And with so many company vying for your business you can get a deal here and there if you look. When I bought this new computer, I got an offer for free digital scrapbook printing. Great price, FREE, and great way to see what you might get without laying out the doe.

Finally, you may have noticed the trend towards Art Journaling. Again, I am behind the time. I have started dabbling though. Many sites are creating their own challenges around art journaling and many designers are exclusively creating Art Journaling kits. Some, like Tangie Studios, even has a subscription program for increasing your stash and challenging you to scrap certain themes.

Thursday Trends: Casey Anthony

She's the name in the news these days. It always amazes me how opinionated everyone is about these things. I don't watch the news and had no idea who she even was until about a month ago when a friend brought up the case. None of us knows what happened to this family, all we really know is that this woman wasn't a good mother. Why do people get so angry and argue with each other over it? Hearing about a little girl who died, it just makes me want to stop reading about it and snuggle my son closer. It doesn't make me angry, just sad. Sad that this kind of thing happens. That children are unwanted or unloved or unnoticed. There are no scrapbook pages of Caylee Anthony.

Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie - Express yourself profoundly

Great word art and quotes can sometimes come with kits you purchase. But they do not always say what you would like to communicate. So I have some ideas for you with links!

You can also google the type of quote you are looking for by subject.

Of course, one of the best quotes to use is right out of the horses mouth. Listen to your kids. And write down the ones that epitomize them or that go along with some aspect of them you just have to scrap.

Have fun with it. Use fonts that bring out the feel of the quote. Blend them, frame them, put them in cartoon balloons. Its all good!

I have a quote I love. It is from Les Miserables. "To love another person is to see the face of God."

I recently was reading a Parent Life magazine and tore these quote out. It really exemplifies how I try to live. I have a background in counseling. I have seen the pain in other peoples liv es and am in tune with the issues I struggle with. We see other people as whole because we have no idea of their flaws and struggles. But we all have them. Here is the quote. "Be kinder than necessary, because you never know what kind of battle everyone else is fighting."

Find the words to express yourself more profoundly. Isn't that just what we are trying to do when we scrap?

Thursday Trends: Mother in Law to be crosses lines...

This woman had clearly lost her mind, and yet I enjoyed reading the article. For real, this woman was pissed off because her daughter-in-law likes to sleep in (on holiday, obviously, since she clearly doesn't live with her) and she's a picky eater? My own mother-in-law hates me because I helped her son realize that he isn't worthless and I don't let her push him around like she did when he was young. Either way, people are so silly. Why look for flaws in people? I mean, really - is this woman's life going to be affect b her daughter-in-law? Clearly she just wants to dislike the woman! Why do we do that to each other? Why not just give someone the benefit of the doubt? Why do we have to judge and push and make people feel bad? I don't get it.

PSE Short Cuts

I have to admit as much as I need shortcuts in many aspects of my life, I tend to do things the hard way. Or should I say, the good old fashion way. :D But in PSP and PSE there are build in short cuts to many of the commands you use. Learning them and using them will help you use your scrapbooking time more wisely.

A number of weeks back ScrapGirls had an article in their newsletter that explains short cuts. Have a look.

What is a shortcut? A short cut is a special key combination that causes a specific command to be executed. Typically, shortcut keys combine the Ctrl or Alt keys with one or more other keys. An example of one that many people use on a regular basis is Ctrl+C - the shortcut key to copy.
Photoshop and Photoshop Elements come with many built-in shortcuts that help make the tasks you do on a regular basis much quicker. Below is a list of the most popular shortcuts. Please keep in mind that these are listed as Windows shortcuts. If you are on a Mac you will substitute Cmd for Ctrl.

What the...really? A sea monster in China? I mean, of COURSE I believe in Nessie, I'm Scottish, but a new sea monster? Not only am I blown away by this (they're trying to pretend it's a whale, AFTER calling it a sea monster, who buys that??) but I had NO IDEA it was even going on. Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie - The Color Wheel

I have always been intrigued by color. When I was little I had this book my Mom bought me that had clear pages that layed over the next page and changed the color of the item when they went together. It was a simple version of how reb and blue make purple. Later, I learned about how the color relate to each other and I discovered the color wheel. Ooooo was I excited.

Color can be pretty confusing sometimes. When I am playing with hue and saturation in PSE my mind boggles. Instead of trying to figure out the dials I just keep my eye on the effect and if I am getting what I want. I feel somewhat defeated by it. LOL

But, the color wheel can be a simple tool, especially when you are talking about scrapbooking. You can find this information in many places but I got it from Rewaj.com, a fashion site that helps you choose clothes based on color and their relationship to each other.

When you buy a scrapbooking kit, you can assume that the designer has already done the work for you. But when you are starting from a photo you want to use or mixing papers and elements from different kits the following information is good information to know.

Primary Colors

All colors are made up from three Primary Colors – Red, Blue and Yellow. All colors are derived from these. You can see them labeled on the diagram.

(In case you’re wondering, these are the same colors used in ink for color printers, although the exact shades and names are slightly different. They are often called Magenta, Cyan and Yellow.)

Secondary Colors

Secondary colors are made by mixing two Primary colors. Orange is from Red and Yellow, Green is from Yellow and Blue, and Violet is from Blue and Red.

Tertiary Colors

These are made by mixing a Primary color with an adjacent Secondary color. Turquoise is a mixture of blue and green, lime-green a mixture of green and yellow, and crimson is a mixture of violet and red. The other three tertiary colors (red-orange, yellow-orange and blue-violet) don’t have any recognized names.

How colors relate to one another

Complimentary Colors

These are the colors which are opposite each other on the wheel – Red and Green, Blue and Orange, etc. They are least like one another. They contrast with each other, and when paired together produce visually stimulating effects. They give a sense of activity and movement to a room.

Harmonizing Colors

On the color wheel you can see colors which lie between two primary colors. For example, crimson, violet, and violet/blue. Colors like this seem to belong together, to be part of a harmonious family.

When a group of colors spans a Primary color, they still have a degree of harmony, but there is also a slight discord. You can still use such colors, but you need to handle them with extra care.

There are some great color scheme generators that can help you find new and exciting couplings for colors. Here is one I hvave used in the past. Enjoy!

Thursday Trends: HARRY POTTER

OK, the first time I heard of HP I was nineteen and a nanny and the kids were reading the first book. It didn't make a big impression when it was a seven-year-old and a nine-year-old taking turns haltingly reading. I picked up the first book again about a year later and I was completely fascinated. JK Rowling (it's pronounced like "bowling") had this whole story in her HEAD? These witches and wizards - they had jobs, sports, schools. It was incredibly, awesomely, wonderfully detailed. All of the characters were complex with families and lives of their own. I loved the entire series. And you know how a movie is NEVER as good as the book? The Harry Potter movies have come pretty close.

I'm 30 and sad that it's coming to an end. "The motion picture event of a generation" is what they're calling it, but it's SO much more than just movies. At dinner once, my three-year-old picked up a French fry and pointed it at a waiter and shouted "EXPECTO PATRONUM!" and I nearly peed my pants laughing. Harry Potter is the kind of book I like because there is NO chance of it being realistic. (Of course, it could just be that I'm an ignorant Muggle.) You can just get lost in the story of someone else and be entertained.
I hope JK writes more books because I can't imagine something she writes not being awesome. And I'll always have Harry in my books and DVDs.

Thursday Trends - Tablet PCs

I'm totally a geek and I LOVE the idea of a tablet PC. I LOVE touchscreen stuff, I love portable stuff, I love everything about it! But...(you knew it was coming, right?)...I have an iPhone and so far there's nothing those silly tablets can do that my phone can't. My stepdad just got an iPad so now we Facetime - while my parents are at home AND I'm at home, so we could just Skype like we were doing until about a week ago. So far, other than it being a new gadget and me being a geek, I don't see the benefit to a tablet. I just really want one anyway!!

Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie - Fun with Frames

Morning all! I was recently reading an article about how to use frames in your layout. It really got my creative juices flowing so I thought I would share it with you all.

I find frames boring. Really. Boring. But this article got me thinking of how I could use frames in a new and exciting way.

These ideas are suggested by Joann Brown at Scrap Girls.

Frame your page with a frame
Frame embellishments
Re-color a frame
Cluster a grouping of frames together
Create a frame with journaling
Use patterned paper on the outside of your layout, to create a "border" for your layout. If you are ever in doubt if your layout looks finished, I suggest trying a thin border around the edge - you will be amazed at the results!

Here is one I thought of on my own. Yup, all me!

Use frames as an embellishment. Sometimes I tuck a frame behind a photo

And if you use more than one of these ideas on a page you will get a very unique and surprising layout. Just think outside the box.

Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie - Breath and make a memory.

Goodness, this is a crazy week. The kid's last day of school and there are picnics and talent shows, teacher conferences and a whinie preschooler who wants none of it. So I am popping in between school activities, literally to take a shower and post here. But my anxious daughter awaits my return. At this moment I feel clean and sweet smelling. I breath deep and am about to jump back into the fray. So here is my tidbit for you... short and sweet.

Take the time to enjoy the moment. Try not to rush from thing to thing but make a memory. Scrapping is about memories and rushing through harry scarey short changes those around us and ourselves. So for me... I am going to take my camera, practice my breathing techniques and make some memories that I can then scrap here at home.

That is all I got for you... I hope that is enough for this week.

Tueday Tidbits - No Mojo? Use a template and fly!

Hey hey all! It's me Stephanie, Promo girl for Kat's Creations. Not only do I do Promotions for Kat but i create for her too. I love to create layouts. I am on a number of creative teams. And I don't know about you but no matter how much I love to scrap, sometimes I am at a loss where to start. It's the loss of mojo! No mojo juices are flowing!

The answer for me is templates! I love them. In fact, I am an addict. I would rather buy templates than kits. LOL I have my favorite template designers, that is for sure. And I keep an eagle eye out for their new releases. But there are many types of templates. You don't want to pick a template that excites you but then has so many layers that you trash it and are back at step one.

So choose your template wisely. If I have no mojo, I usually am looking for a more simple template that is not going to challenge me to fill in 30 layers. Or I might duplicate a template and carefully delete some of the layers to simplify it. If I am looking for a challenge and have lots of time on a Saturday moring I might actually tackle one of those more complex templates but it takes way more than one sitting for me.

Kat has some great templates that help you jump start your layouts. Her template line is called Scrapping Made Easy. And she has two volumes of templates. You can see the previews below.

Omgoodness, late again. Kat is chasing with a spatula.

Today I have a little tidbit for you but OH MY, its worth its weight in gold.

I don't know about you but I love original fonts. And really, you can't have too many when you're scrapping. I admit to buying alot of Darcy Baldwin's fonts.

But I was visiting a designer blog this weekend and I found this link which i must share. It a blog called Kevin and Amanda. Once you get there you scratch your head cause there are recipe's for lasagna and such but not too far away is a link or two that will have you swooning.

Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie - Soft Light

Hey ho all! It's Stephanie with another Tuesday Tidbit!

A few weeks back I was telling you all about using the Unsharp Mask to give your finished layout a punch. Well... it is no longer my favorite thing! LOL And, if you know me, you know I am not fickle. I am loyal to a fault. But, if something somes along that does that job even better, I say "Go for it!".

So here it is... Soft Light.

Now, as you know, I am a Paint Shop Pro user. I am now taking a class to learn PSE9 but I am a novice. But I would think that if you do use PSE you know where Soft Light is located.

In PSP it is a Blend Mode that can be set in the Layer Properties of any layer by double clicking on the layer.

After I finish a layout, I duplicate it. I stay on the top layer. Open Layer Properties and set the blend mode to Soft Light. I set the opacity around 70%. Then I merge the two layers and finish saving.

My Pretty In Pink layout is a good example. Here it is before I add the Soft Light.

And here it is with the Soft Light blend. It does make the layout larger in size but i think the effect is worth it. Try it yourself.

This layout was made with The Beauty in You by Kat, of course!

Tuesday Tidbit with Stephanie ~ PSE Guided Editing Feature

Morning all! It's Stephanie again with another Tuesday Tidbit here at Kat's Creations.

I think I mentioned last week that I am taking a beginners class for Photoshop Elements 9 (PSE9). Its a six weeks course so it should give me some great tidbits for Tuesdays.

In my lesson last week I found out something wonderful! Something that Paint Shop Pro does not do and PSE does. Its called Guided Editing. Here is the magic. You click on something you want to do. It could be a simple as correcting the color on a photo or as fun as adding a filter. The guided editing walks you right through it. After trying these out you will be so familiar with so many actions in the software that you can't help but gain confidence.

There is actually a ful guide for editing a photo. Not just fixing one thing but addressing all issues. How marvelous. But then there is more! There is a Photo Merge function where you can blend two photos and Fun Edits where you can add lomo effects, reflections and play with Out of Bounds filter where you take a part of the photo and make it look like it is bounding outside the limits of the photo.

Here is the lomo effect I did. I know I will be using this over and over. Here is the before:

And here is the same image with the lomo effect. The lomo effection create darkness around the dge and a blow in the middle of the photo.

Schooling Friday: Why Digital?

First, let me introduce myself...
I'm Tammy, Kat's new Promo girl. Just "started" this week, so I thought for my first Schooling Friday, I'd start off simple...why go digital?

I've had multiple friends and coworkers find my layouts fun and cute, but think it would be so hard to learn and they'd never have time. Time? I don't have a lot of time either. I have a 2 year old and a teenager, and a 1 1/2 hour commute each day. But I can sit down at my computer in the early morning hours and create a layout in 20 minutes. That's just enough time to drink my energy drink and check emails.

So, why digital?

1. There's no mess. It is all on your laptop or computer. You just save your files and there is no cleaning up!
2. You don't use hardly any paper or supplies so it's good for the environment.
3. You can edit your pages at any time. If you are working on it and learn a new technique - go back and change it.
4. It's easy to have your pages duplicated for multiple books - one for you and one for grandma.
5. You can back up these memories - Backing up your layouts and/or books insures you can retrieve your memories if the books are ever lost or stolen. Why would someone steal another person's scrapbook though? Hmm...

Tuesday Tidbit - LVS

Morning all! Its Stephanie with another Tuesday Tidbit. As many of you know I am a Paint Shop Pro user. But this week I started taking a PSE 9 class. That is right, I have bitten the bullet. The actions and styles available through Paintshop Elements can not be resisted. I am doing this on line at a site called LVS. I have taken a design course over at LVS (Leaders in Virtual Studies) and learned a bit about graphic design. I have also taken course over there on HTML, Cascading Styles Sheets, Wed Design, Java Scrapt Basics and yup, you got it... Creating Your Own Scrapbook Elements.

If you love to learn. If you want to know more. If you want to increase your skills a graphic design, digital scrapbooking or are just plain curious, check LVS out. The first class is $20 for a 6 week course and each subsequest class is $12-15 for returning students. I think those prices are amazing for the information and instruction you receive. You can do instructor lead course or self-lead. Its all good.
